Turquoise is a hydrated copper aluminium phosphate mineral with the chemical formula CuAl₆(PO₄)₄(OH)₈·4H₂O. Its colour ranges from blue and blue-green to green, depending largely on its chemical composition and the presence of other minerals.
This rough Turquoise from Mexico retains its natural surface and irregular form rather than being polished or shaped. The unworked material allows the mineral texture, colour variations and natural matrix to remain visible.
What is Turquoise?
Turquoise forms when copper-rich groundwater interacts with aluminium- and phosphorus-bearing rocks. The process takes place over long periods in relatively dry environments. As a result, turquoise commonly occurs as veins, nodules, or irregular masses within its host rock.
Mexico is an important source of turquoise, with deposits occurring in several regions of the country. Mexican turquoise can show a range of blue, green-blue and green colours, often accompanied by natural matrix patterns.
The colour of turquoise is related to its chemistry. Copper generally contributes to blue and blue-green colours, while iron can influence greener tones. The material may also contain visible brown, grey or dark matrix from the surrounding rock.
Physical Characteristics
