Exceptional Museum-Grade Selenite Crystal – Lavrio, Greece
This remarkable selenite crystal cluster comes from the historic Lavrio mining district in Greece. With sharp, orange-tinted blades and excellent luster, it presents classic selenite form and clarity. The specimen stands out for its transparent striations, internal zoning, and natural terminations. Iron oxide inclusions likely give it the warm hue, a feature typical of Lavrio pieces.
Selenite is a crystalline variety of gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O). It forms in low-temperature evaporitic or hydrothermal environments. With a Mohs hardness of 2, it cleaves perfectly and often develops into large, transparent blades. This piece shows textbook twinning and fine striations along the c-axis, offering a clear view of its internal crystal structure.
Lavrio’s mining history stretches back over 2,000 years. Ancient Athenians extracted silver, lead, and zinc here to fund their economy and navy. Today, collectors value Lavrio for its wide variety of secondary minerals. The area has produced over 600 documented mineral species, including many rare sulfosalts and gypsum varieties.
Lavrio selenite stands apart due to its distinct crystal habit, color, and etching. Specimens from this region often show exceptional preservation and character. This particular piece ranks as museum-quality for both its form and origin.
Its scientific value makes it ideal for collectors, institutions, or educators. It offers not only beauty but also an outstanding example of gypsum crystallization in a polymetallic environment. The combination of sharp geometry, rich color, and historic provenance makes it a top-tier addition to any advanced mineral
