The Gamal Tree, native to Indonesia, flourishes predominantly on the eastern side of Bali. Traditionally, locals use its wood to feed goats and buffalo, while its branches are repurposed into polished slabs. However, it is the root sections that truly stand out for their unique texture and strength, making them the ideal foundation for exquisite hand-blown glass vessels.
Artisans skillfully transform the Gamal root into stunning bases for hand-blown glass pieces, such as bowls, vases, pitchers, and candle holders. First, they carefully cut, clean, and kiln-dry each root. This ensures it is perfectly prepared for the intricate process of combining glass and wood.
Next, molten glass is applied directly to the Gamal root, blending nature with human craftsmanship. The rough, organic surface of the root contrasts beautifully with the smooth, vibrant molten glass, creating a striking visual effect. As a result, the glass molds seamlessly to the unique shape of the root, accentuating its natural curves and patterns.
Once the root base is ready, skilled Indonesian artisans hand-blow the glass directly onto it. As the glass cools and solidifies, it forms a beautiful coating that enhances the root’s intricate texture. Consequently, the fluidity of the molten glass merges perfectly with the root’s organic form, ensuring each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.
This fusion of glass and wood not only highlights the artisan’s skill but also celebrates the beauty of natural materials. Furthermore, these unique creations serve as functional works of art, ideal for home décor, sculpture, or lighting. By sourcing the materials directly from local farmers, the process supports their livelihoods and contributes to the local economy, making each piece a sustainable masterpiece.
